Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh general administration department (GAD) on Wednesday wrote to the treasury department to do the needful for Lokayukta Justice N K Gupta’s salary and allowances, as per the terms of his extended tenure.
The letter was written by GAD deputy secretary Ranjana Patne. As stipulated by the notification, dated October 16, 2017, Justice N K Gupta had assumed office as the Lokayukta and took oath of office on October 18, 2017.
His six-year term concluded on Tuesday. An amendment in the MP Lokayukta and Up-Lokayukta Act enables the Lokayukta to continue in office for a period not exceeding a year after the expiration of their term until a successor takes over. “As the process of appointing a successor for Justice N K Gupta has not been finalized, it is imperative to adhere to the legal provision. Therefore, action should be taken to ensure the payment of Justice N K Gupta’s salary and allowances, as per the terms of his extended tenure,” GAD wrote.
The Governor appoints the Lokayukta after consulting with a committee of the CM, assembly speaker and leader of opposition.
